RTG Video Poker

(editor) | Updated:

RealTime Gaming was founded more than 20 years ago as a small casino software company in Atlanta, Georgia, and today it is regarded as one of the pioneers in the industry. It does not have the largest collection of games, nor is it the most popular supplier of slots and table games for online casinos. At the same time, RealTime Gaming, abbreviated as RTG, offers entertaining, varied content that many online players prefer for its authenticity and user-friendly interface.

Currently, RTG offers a wide assortment of games: more than 130 video slots, various versions of blackjack, poker, and roulette, as well as bingo games and scratch cards. It also offers a great selection of single- and multi-hand video poker variations that can be played for as little as $0.01 per round.

RealTime Gaming History and Overview

1Founding and Acquision by Hastings International

RealTime Gaming was founded in 1998, making it one of the first companies to develop casino games and complete software solutions for the online gambling industry. Originally based in Atlanta, Georgia, RTG relocated to Heredia, Costa Rica, in 2007.

That same year, it was acquired by Hastings International, a Curacao-based company located about 40 miles north of the Venezuelan coast in the Dutch Caribbean. Since then, RTG has partnered with many online casino operators, and today, hundreds of gaming sites are powered by its software.

2Welcoming US Players

In 2006 and 2007, many poker companies and online gambling operators left the US market following the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, which imposed numerous restrictions and stringent regulations. However, this legislation, later widely known as the US anti-gambling law, did not affect RTG licensees, as these operators were authorized to offer gambling products and services under the jurisdiction of Curacao.

The local regulator adopted a more liberal approach, which allowed many fraudulent companies to target US players. Consequently, the only option for online casino fans from the country was to play at RTG casinos. Today, the vast majority of casinos with a Curacao license follow much stricter rules and standards for security and fairness.

RTG remains the sole software provider supplying content to US-friendly casinos, and each game uses RNG software audited by independent testing agencies. The use of an RNG, or Random Number Generator, guarantees that the games are fair and that their outcomes cannot be manipulated or predicted.

3Gaming Portfolio

Like most developers of online casino software, RTG focuses primarily on slots, regularly releasing classic 3-reel games, modern video slots, and titles with progressive jackpots. Some of these games offer only basic features and average graphic quality, while others are highly entertaining and visually appealing thanks to crisp graphics, vivid animations, and engaging bonus rounds.

Along with its slot lineup, RealTime Gaming’s portfolio includes a broad range of card and table games. The studio offers digital versions of many casino classics, including blackjack, baccarat, roulette, poker, and craps. It has also added a rich selection of video poker titles, and players at an RTG-powered casino can choose from more than twenty single- and multi-hand games.

RTG Video Poker Software and Features

RealTime Gaming offers a Flash Casino that lets games launch instantly in-browser, but its full portfolio is available through the downloadable Casino Client. Players can find RTG video poker titles integrated into the platforms of some larger operators, yet the games are more commonly featured at casinos fully powered by RTG. In recent years, the studio has also focused on its mobile offering, optimizing many of its slots and table games for iOS and Android devices.

Interestingly, many RTG games include features that can be configured by the casino operator. For instance, casinos can set the number of decks and enable the Surrender option in blackjack. In RTG video poker variations, they are free to adjust paytables, directly affecting the games’ expected returns.

Video poker is a fascinating and unique casino game. It comes in dozens of variations, yet they all follow roughly the same rules. RealTime Gaming’s video poker titles are no exception, as they are almost identical in rules and gameplay, with the only major differences appearing in the paytables. Each game uses a single deck of 52 cards, which is shuffled after every round, except for a handful of games that add a Joker.

To win, players must form a qualifying poker hand shown in the paytable. Play unfolds in two draws. First, they receive five cards and choose which ones to keep or discard. After clicking the Deal/Draw button, a new set of cards replaces the discards, and winning combinations are evaluated.

In the most basic versions, the lowest-paying hand is Jacks or Better, a pair of Jacks or higher, which pays even money at 1:1. The top-paying combination is a Royal Flush, and players can receive 250 to 4,000 times their bet depending on the number of coins wagered.
